How It Works
Aluminum foil reflects up to 97% of radiant heat energy. In a sauna, that means the heat your heater generates bounces back into the room instead of being absorbed by the wall structure. Types of Sauna Foil
- Standalone aluminum foil: Thin, flexible sheets that staple directly over standard insulation. The most common choice for custom sauna builds.
- Foil-faced kraft paper: Aluminum bonded to heavy paper for easier handling and installation. Slightly less reflective but more tear-resistant.
- Bubble foil insulation: Foil bonded to a bubble wrap core. Adds a small amount of insulation value on top of the reflective properties. Works well in walls with limited cavity depth.
Installation Basics
Foil goes on the warm side - facing the interior of the sauna, installed between the stud insulation and the interior wood paneling. Leave a small air gap between the foil and the paneling if possible (furring strips work great for this). That air gap lets the reflective surface do its job more effectively.
Overlap all seams by at least 2 inches and seal them with aluminum foil tape. Regular tape fails in sauna heat. Cover the ceiling too - heat rises, and the ceiling is where you lose the most energy without proper insulation.
