Frequently Asked Questions

Cold Plunge Questions

What is a cold plunge and what are the benefits?

A cold plunge is a tub designed for cold water immersion therapy, typically at temperatures between 39-59°F (4-15°C). Benefits include reduced inflammation, improved circulation, enhanced recovery after exercise, boosted immune function, increased mental clarity, and improved mood through endorphin release.

How do I maintain my cold plunge water?

Cold plunge water maintenance involves regular filtration, sanitization, and water testing. We recommend using a combination of ozone or UV sanitation with a small amount of chlorine or bromine. Change the water every 2-4 weeks and clean the tub monthly. Check out our detailed water maintenance guide for step-by-step instructions.

Sauna Questions

What temperature should a sauna be?

Traditional Finnish saunas typically operate between 150-195°F (65-90°C). For beginners, we recommend starting at 150-160°F and gradually increasing. Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures, typically 120-150°F (49-65°C), but provide deep tissue heating.

What electrical requirements do saunas need?

Most electric sauna heaters require a dedicated 240V circuit. Smaller heaters (4-6kW) typically need a 30-amp circuit, while larger heaters (8-10.5kW) require a 40-50 amp circuit. We recommend hiring a licensed electrician for installation. Our professional installation service includes all electrical work.

Contrast Therapy

What is contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy involves alternating between hot (sauna) and cold (cold plunge) exposure. A typical protocol includes 15-20 minutes in the sauna followed by 2-5 minutes in the cold plunge, repeated 2-3 rounds. This practice can enhance circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and support recovery.

Barrel Sauna Questions

What is the difference between a barrel sauna and a cube sauna?

Barrel saunas feature a cylindrical design that promotes natural air convection and heats up approximately 23% faster than box-style saunas of equivalent size. Their rounded shape distributes heat more evenly and uses less energy per session. Cube saunas offer a modern, architectural aesthetic with clean lines and full-glass fronts that provide panoramic views. Both styles are built from the same premium thermo-spruce and feature identical bench quality. The choice often comes down to aesthetics: barrel saunas have a classic, rustic look while cube saunas complement contemporary home designs.

How long does it take to assemble a barrel sauna?

All SaunaLife barrel saunas and cube saunas are engineered for DIY assembly. Two people can typically complete the full assembly in one day (6-8 hours) using basic hand tools. No special skills or equipment are required — the stave-and-band construction uses a proven interlocking system. If you'd prefer professional installation, SweatDecks offers full installation services in Austin, Los Angeles, and Houston, including site preparation, assembly, and electrical connections for your sauna heater.

What is thermo-spruce and why is it used in saunas?

Thermo-spruce (thermally modified spruce) is Nordic spruce wood that has been heated to 400°F+ in a controlled kiln process. This thermal modification permanently changes the wood's cellular structure, dramatically reducing its ability to absorb moisture. The result is wood that resists warping, cracking, rot, and decay — making it ideal for outdoor sauna use in any climate. Thermo-spruce also has a beautiful caramel color and provides excellent thermal insulation (R-value), helping your sauna retain heat more efficiently.

What size barrel sauna do I need?

Choose your barrel sauna size based on typical usage: a 3-person barrel sauna is ideal for individuals and couples who primarily sauna alone or as a pair. A 4-person barrel sauna is our most popular size — perfect for small families and occasional entertaining. A 6-person barrel sauna is best for larger families, frequent entertaining, or anyone who simply wants maximum interior space and the ability to have multi-level seating for different heat preferences.

Sauna Heater Questions

What is the difference between HUUM and Harvia sauna heaters?

HUUM heaters (from Estonia) are known for their award-winning modern design, massive stone capacity, and exceptional löyly (steam) quality. The Drop series won a Red Dot Design Award and holds more stones than any competing wall-mounted heater. HUUM heaters are ideal for enthusiasts who prioritize aesthetics and traditional Finnish-style soft steam. Harvia heaters (from Finland) are the world's best-selling sauna heaters, trusted for their rock-solid reliability, simple operation, and proven track record across millions of installations worldwide. Both brands produce excellent heaters — your choice depends on whether you prioritize design and steam quality (HUUM) or proven reliability and value (Harvia).

What size sauna heater do I need?

The general rule is 1kW per 50 cubic feet of sauna volume. For our 3-person barrel saunas, a 4.5-6kW heater is ideal. For 4-person models, choose 6-7.5kW. For 6-person barrel saunas and cube saunas, select an 8-9kW heater. If your sauna has a glass front or glass windows, add 1-2kW to compensate for the additional heat loss through the glass. All our heaters operate on 240V and require a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician — our professional installation service includes all electrical work.

Contrast Therapy & Wellness

What are the benefits of contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy — alternating between hot sauna sessions and cold plunge immersion — is one of the most effective natural wellness protocols available. The hot-cold cycling causes rapid vasodilation and vasoconstriction, which research suggests can: significantly improve blood circulation, reduce chronic inflammation, accelerate post-exercise muscle recovery, strengthen immune response, improve cardiovascular health, enhance mood through endorphin and norepinephrine release, improve sleep quality, and reduce perceived stress. A typical contrast therapy session involves 15-20 minutes in the sauna at 160-190°F, followed by 2-5 minutes in a cold plunge at 38-50°F, repeated for 2-3 rounds.

Is cold plunging safe for everyone?

While cold water immersion is generally safe for healthy adults, certain conditions require medical clearance before starting a cold plunge routine. Consult your physician if you have heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, Raynaud's syndrome, or are pregnant. Beginners should start with warmer temperatures (55-60°F) and shorter durations (30-60 seconds), gradually working down to colder temperatures and longer exposures as your body adapts. Never cold plunge alone — always have someone nearby, especially during your first sessions.
