Sauna Delivery Guide: What to Expect When Your Sauna Ships
You placed the order. The excitement is real. But a sauna is not an Amazon package - it's hundreds of pounds of wood, glass, and hardware arriving on a freight truck. If you've never received a large freight delivery before, the process can catch you off guard.
This guide walks through everything from order confirmation to getting the sauna off the truck and into your yard, so there are no surprises on delivery day.

How Sauna Shipping Works
Most home saunas ship via LTL (less-than-truckload) freight. That means your sauna shares truck space with other shipments heading in the same direction. It's not like a courier dropping off a box at your door.
Here's how the process typically goes:
- Order confirmation. You get an email confirming your order and estimated ship date.
- Shipment notification. Once the sauna leaves the warehouse, you receive tracking info and a carrier name.
- Delivery appointment. The freight carrier calls to schedule a delivery window (usually a 4-hour block).
- Delivery day. The truck arrives, and you receive your sauna at curbside or end of driveway.
At SweatDecks, orders over $5,000 ship free. For orders under that threshold, shipping costs depend on distance and weight.
Shipping Timelines: How Long Will It Take?
Sauna shipping timelines vary depending on where the sauna is built and where you live.
| Scenario | Typical Timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| In-stock, domestic warehouse | 1-3 weeks | Fastest option, depends on freight routing |
| Built to order, domestic | 3-6 weeks | Production time plus transit |
| Imported (Finland, Estonia, etc.) | 6-12 weeks | Ocean freight adds significant time |
| Peak season (April-July) | Add 1-3 weeks | Everyone orders saunas in spring |
If you want your sauna ready for summer, order in late winter or early spring. Waiting until May or June means you may not get it installed until mid-summer or later.
What Arrives on the Truck
A typical residential sauna delivery includes one or more pallets or crates containing:
- Pre-cut wall panels, staves, or flat-pack components
- Benches (sometimes pre-assembled)
- Door and frame
- Heater (if included with purchase)
- Hardware kit - screws, bands, brackets, handles
- Assembly manual and instructions
Total weight ranges from 500 lbs for a small 2-person kit to over 2,000 lbs for a large 6-8 person model. The shipment will be palletized and wrapped.
Curbside vs. Threshold vs. White Glove Delivery
Curbside Delivery (Standard)
The driver drops the pallets at the end of your driveway or as close to your property as the truck can safely get. This is what most freight shipments include. The driver is not responsible for bringing the sauna into your yard or backyard. You need to move it from there.
Liftgate Service
If you don't have a forklift or loading dock (and you probably don't), request liftgate service. The driver uses a hydraulic lift to lower the pallet from the truck to ground level. This is often an add-on fee of $75-150 but is absolutely worth it. Without a liftgate, you're looking at a 4-foot drop from the truck bed.
White Glove Delivery
Some sellers offer white glove delivery where a crew brings the sauna to its final location and may even assemble it. This is the most expensive option but eliminates the logistics headache entirely. Ask about availability when you order.
Preparing Your Property for Delivery Day
A little preparation prevents a lot of frustration:
- Clear the path. Make sure the truck can access your driveway. Trim any overhanging branches. Move cars, trash cans, and anything blocking the route.
- Measure your gate. If the sauna needs to go through a side gate to reach the backyard, measure it. Many pallets are 4-5 feet wide. You may need to unpack and carry pieces through individually.
- Have your foundation ready. Your gravel pad, concrete slab, or deck should be complete before delivery. See our sauna foundation guide for details.
- Round up help. You'll want at least 2-3 strong people available to move components from the driveway to the sauna location.
- Have tools ready. A utility knife for cutting wrap, a pry bar for crate lids, and a dolly or hand truck for moving heavy components.
Inspecting Your Delivery
This is the most important step, and people skip it all the time. Before the driver leaves:
- Count the pieces. Match the number of packages to your packing list or bill of lading.
- Check for visible damage. Look at every side of every crate and pallet. Water stains, crushed corners, punctures, or broken wrapping all get noted.
- Note damage on the delivery receipt. If anything looks damaged, write it on the driver's paperwork before signing. "Possible damage to crate #2 - dented corner" is enough. Once you sign clean, filing a freight claim gets much harder.
- Take photos. Photograph everything, especially any damage. Snap pictures of labels, tracking stickers, and the overall condition of the shipment.
Open and inspect the actual contents within 48 hours. If you find hidden damage (cracked glass, split wood), contact the seller immediately with photos.
Moving the Sauna to Its Final Location
Getting a 500-2,000 lb shipment from your driveway to the backyard is the part most people underestimate. Here are your options:
- Carry it piece by piece. Unpack the pallet at the driveway and carry individual panels, benches, and parts to the build site. This is the most common approach for flat-pack saunas and works fine with 2-3 people.
- Use a furniture dolly. A heavy-duty dolly or hand truck handles most panels and the heater. Plywood sheets laid across grass create a smooth rolling path.
- Rent a mini skid steer or Dingo. For pre-assembled barrel saunas or very heavy components, a small tracked machine makes the job easy. Rental runs about $200-300 for a day.
- Hire movers. Two movers for 2-3 hours typically costs $200-400 and saves your back.
Pre-Assembled vs. Flat-Pack: Delivery Differences
| Factor | Flat-Pack Kit | Pre-Assembled |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping cost | Lower (compact packaging) | Higher (oversized load) |
| Delivery access | Fits through gates easily | Needs wide, clear path |
| Unloading | Piece by piece, manageable | Requires equipment or crew |
| Time to usable | Assembly needed (4-12 hours) | Ready same day after placement |
Common Delivery Problems and How to Handle Them
Driver Can't Reach Your House
Freight trucks are large. If you live on a narrow road, dead-end street, or have a steep driveway, the truck may not be able to get close. Contact the carrier in advance to discuss access. In some cases, you can meet the truck at a nearby parking lot.
Missing Components
Occasionally a piece goes missing in transit. Don't panic. Contact the seller with your order number, photos of what arrived, and a list of what's missing. Replacement parts typically ship within a week.
Weather Delays
Freight carriers reschedule for severe weather. If your delivery window gets pushed, be patient. A day or two delay is better than water-damaged wood.
After Delivery: Next Steps
Once everything is on site and inspected:
- Sort and organize all components by the assembly manual's parts list.
- Let the wood acclimate for 24-48 hours if it was shipped sealed in plastic.
- Begin assembly or schedule your contractor. Check our barrel sauna assembly guide if you're building it yourself.
- Schedule your electrician for the heater hookup. See our electrical requirements guide.
