What to Expect on Sauna Delivery Day
You ordered your sauna, you prepped the foundation, and now the delivery truck is on its way. Delivery day is exciting, but it goes much better if you know what to expect and have a few things ready. Here is a straightforward rundown so there are no surprises.

Before the Truck Arrives
Get these things done the day before or morning of delivery:
- Clear the delivery path - The route from where the truck parks to the final sauna location needs to be clear of obstacles. Move cars, garbage cans, lawn furniture, garden hoses - anything in the way.
- Measure gate openings - If the sauna needs to go through a side gate, fence gate, or between structures, verify the opening is wide enough. Sauna panels and barrel sections are often 4-6 feet wide. Measure the narrowest point along the path.
- Confirm the foundation is ready - Your concrete pad, gravel base, or deck should be finished, level, and dry. Having to delay assembly because the foundation is not ready is frustrating for everyone.
- Have helpers available - Even with professional delivery, extra hands make unloading and moving components faster. Two to four people beyond the delivery driver is ideal for most saunas.

How Sauna Delivery Typically Works
Most saunas ship one of two ways:
Curbside Freight Delivery
This is the most common delivery method for saunas ordered online. A freight truck arrives with your sauna on a pallet or multiple pallets. The driver uses a liftgate to lower the pallets to the street or driveway. The delivery is to the curb or end of the driveway - not to the backyard.
From there, it is your responsibility to move the components to the final location. This is where helpers, a hand truck, and possibly a furniture dolly come in.
White Glove Delivery
Some retailers and manufacturers offer white glove delivery where the team brings the sauna to the installation location, unpacks it, and sometimes assembles it. This costs more but eliminates the heavy lifting on your end. Ask about this option when ordering if your outdoor sauna or barrel sauna is going to a hard-to-reach spot.
What Arrives in the Shipment
Depending on the sauna type, you will receive some combination of:
- Wall and roof panels (prefab indoor and cabin-style outdoor saunas)
- Staves and metal bands (barrel saunas)
- Bench components - Pre-cut and often pre-drilled
- Door and frame - Usually pre-assembled
- Heater - Packed separately with its mounting hardware
- Sauna stones - Heavy, usually in a separate box
- Hardware bag - Screws, bolts, brackets, and assembly instructions
- Accessories - Bucket and ladle, thermometer, light fixture, depending on what was included
Inspect Everything Immediately
This is the most important step on delivery day. Before the driver leaves (for freight delivery) or before you sign off on white glove delivery, inspect every piece:
- Check the packing list against what actually arrived. Count every box and panel.
- Look for visible damage on the outside of all packaging. Crushed corners, holes in cardboard, water stains, or broken strapping are all warning signs.
- Open and inspect panels and major components for cracks, splits, or dents. Wood damage that happened during shipping is the carrier's responsibility, but only if you document it at delivery.
- Note any damage on the delivery receipt before you sign it. Write "received with damage" or "possible concealed damage" if anything looks suspicious. This protects your ability to file a freight claim later.
Take photos of everything - the truck, the pallets, any damage, and the condition of all components. If there is an issue, photos are your best evidence.
Moving Components to the Install Location
Individual sauna panels typically weigh 30-80 pounds each. Manageable for two people to carry. Barrel sauna staves are lighter individually but there are many of them. The heaviest single components are usually the door (with glass) and the heater.
Tips for moving components:
- Use a hand truck or dolly for heavy items
- Lay cardboard or moving blankets on the path to protect components if you are dragging them
- Stack panels flat, not leaning, to prevent warping
- Keep the hardware bag with you - it is small and easy to lose
- If you cannot assemble the same day, store components in a dry, covered area. Do not leave raw wood panels sitting in rain.
Assembly Day vs. Delivery Day
You do not have to assemble the sauna the same day it arrives. In fact, separating delivery and assembly into two days often works better - day one for unloading, inspecting, and organizing; day two for building. Just make sure everything is stored safely and dry overnight.
Common Delivery Day Issues
- Missing parts - Hardware bags or small components get separated during shipping. Check the packing list carefully and contact the seller immediately if anything is missing.
- Minor wood imperfections - Small knots, grain variations, or very slight surface blemishes are normal in natural wood products and not considered defects.
- The truck cannot reach your driveway - Full-size freight trucks need room to maneuver. If your street or driveway is narrow, let the seller know when ordering so they can arrange a smaller delivery vehicle.
- Weather - Delivery happens rain or shine. If it is raining, unload quickly and move everything under cover. Prolonged rain exposure on unpacked wood components can cause staining.
Bottom Line
Sauna delivery day is straightforward if you prepare the path, have helpers ready, and inspect everything before the truck leaves. Document any damage, move components carefully to the install site, and store them dry if you are not assembling the same day. A little preparation on delivery day sets you up for a smooth assembly.
