Sauna with Dental Braces: what matters most
Getting braces is already an adjustment. Adding questions about whether your daily sauna habit is safe with a mouth full of metal just adds to the confusion. The good news: this is one of the simpler sauna safety questions out there.

Metal Braces in the Sauna
Traditional metal braces (stainless steel or titanium brackets and wires) are completely safe in the sauna. Here's why you don't need to worry:
The metal doesn't get dangerously hot. Orthodontic brackets are tiny and mounted directly on your teeth, which are surrounded by oral tissue at body temperature (around 98.6°F). Your mouth's blood supply acts as a cooling system. Even in a 190°F sauna, the metal in your braces won't heat up enough to cause discomfort or damage. You breathe through your mouth and nose, which are well below ambient sauna temperature.
The adhesive is heat-resistant. Orthodontic bonding adhesive is designed to withstand everything that happens in the mouth, including hot food and drinks that can exceed 140°F. Sauna temperatures don't reach the brackets with enough intensity to affect the bond.
The wires remain stable. Nickel-titanium and stainless steel wires used in orthodontics are engineered for temperature stability. While nickel-titanium wires are actually temperature-responsive (they become more active at body temperature), sauna ambient heat doesn't penetrate your mouth enough to significantly change wire behavior.

Ceramic and Clear Braces
Ceramic brackets (tooth-colored braces) are also safe in the sauna. The ceramic material is heat-resistant, and the same thermal buffering from your oral tissue applies. You won't notice any difference in your sauna experience with ceramic versus metal brackets.
Clear Aligners (Invisalign, ClearCorrect)
This is where the answer changes. Clear plastic aligners should be removed before sauna sessions. Here's why:
Clear aligners are made from thermoplastic material that's engineered to fit precisely. While they're designed to handle normal mouth temperatures, prolonged exposure to sauna heat could theoretically soften or warp the plastic, affecting the fit. A warped aligner that doesn't fit properly won't move your teeth correctly and may need to be replaced.
The practical approach:
- Pop your aligners out before entering the sauna
- Store them in their case in a cool location (not on the sauna bench)
- Do your session (15-20 minutes is fine)
- Cool down, then put them back in
- The 15-20 minute break won't affect your treatment timeline
Retainers
Wire retainers (bonded): Permanently bonded retainers behind your teeth are fine in the sauna - same logic as braces.
Hawley retainers (removable with wire and acrylic): Remove before sauna. The acrylic can warp with extreme heat.
Clear retainers (Essix-type): Remove before sauna, same as clear aligners. The thin plastic is vulnerable to heat distortion.
Comfort Tips
Even though braces are safe in the sauna, a few tips make the experience more comfortable:
- Stay hydrated. Braces can make your mouth feel drier. Dehydration from sauna sweating amplifies this. Sip water during your session.
- Breathe through your nose. This naturally humidifies the air before it reaches your mouth, reducing dryness around brackets. It's also better for the sauna experience in general.
- Rinse after. Sweat can drip into your mouth during a sauna session. Rinse with water after to keep your brackets clean. Salt from sweat sitting on brackets isn't ideal.
- Use orthodontic wax if needed. If sauna heat makes you more aware of your brackets rubbing your cheeks, a dab of orthodontic wax on the irritating bracket can help.
After Orthodontic Adjustments
If you just had your wires tightened or adjusted, your teeth may be sore. Sauna heat can actually help with this - the warmth increases blood flow and the endorphin release provides natural pain relief. Many people find that a sauna session on the day of an adjustment helps reduce the soreness that typically peaks 24-48 hours later.
The Bottom Line
Metal braces, ceramic braces, and bonded retainers are all perfectly safe in the sauna. Clear aligners and removable plastic retainers should be taken out. That's really all there is to it.
