pH Testing: Balancing Your Cold Plunge Water Chemistry

pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline your water is, on a scale from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 being neutral. For cold plunge water, maintaining the right pH is important for both your comfort and the longevity of your equipment. Water that's too acidic or too alkaline can irritate skin, corrode metal components, and make your sanitation system less effective.

Ideal pH for Cold Plunges

Keep your cold plunge water between 7.2 and 7.8 pH. This range is:

  • Comfortable for skin and eyes: Human skin has a natural pH around 5.5, but water in the 7.2-7.8 range feels neutral and non-irritating
  • Optimal for sanitation: Chlorine and other sanitizers work most effectively in this range. Outside of it, you're wasting sanitizer
  • Safe for equipment: Metal fittings, pump seals, and heat exchanger coils last longest when pH stays in this zone

How to Test pH

You have two main options:

  • Test strips: Dip a strip in the water, wait 15 seconds, and compare the color to the chart on the bottle. Cheap ($5-10 for 50-100 strips) and easy, but less precise. Good enough for routine checks
  • Digital pH meter: Dip the probe, read the number. More accurate and easier to read than color-matching strips. $15-40 for a basic one. Needs periodic calibration with buffer solution

Test pH at least twice per week, or after adding any chemicals to the water. Temperature doesn't significantly affect pH readings in the cold plunge range.

Adjusting pH

  • pH too high (alkaline): Add a pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate or muriatic acid, diluted). Add small amounts, circulate, and retest
  • pH too low (acidic): Add a pH increaser (sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate). Same approach - small doses, circulate, retest

Both pH up and pH down products are available at any pool supply store. Use them sparingly - it's easy to overshoot. Add half of what you think you need, run the pump for 15 minutes, then test again.

What Affects pH

Your cold plunge pH will drift over time due to:

  • Body oils, sweat, and lotions from users
  • Tap water chemistry (your starting pH depends on your local water supply)
  • Sanitizer additions
  • Water hardness (hard water tends to push pH up)
