Harvia vs HUUM Sauna Heater: Which Brand Is Worth the Money?

When you're shopping for a premium sauna heater, two names come up constantly: Harvia and HUUM. Both are European brands with serious reputations. Both make heaters that sauna enthusiasts genuinely love. But they approach sauna heating from very different design philosophies. Here's how they stack up.

The Brands at a Glance

Harvia

Harvia is a Finnish company that's been making sauna heaters since 1950. They're the largest sauna heater manufacturer in the world. Their product line is enormous - from basic wall-mounted units for home saunas to massive commercial heaters for public facilities. Harvia is the safe, proven, everyone-knows-them choice. If a sauna has a heater, there's a good chance it's a Harvia.

HUUM

HUUM is an Estonian company that launched in 2011. They took a completely different approach: fewer products, design-forward aesthetics, and a focus on steam quality above everything else. Their heaters look like modern sculptures. HUUM is the newcomer that's earned respect fast by doing a few things exceptionally well.

Design and Aesthetics

This is where HUUM stands apart immediately. Their flagship Drop heater is a teardrop-shaped tower of stacked stones that looks like a piece of art. The Hive is a cylindrical stone tower that becomes the visual centerpiece of any sauna. HUUM heaters don't hide - they're designed to be seen and admired.

Harvia heaters are more traditional in design. Their wall-mounted models are functional and compact. Their freestanding Cilindro and Legend series are attractive but designed with a more utilitarian Scandinavian approach. They look good, but they're not trying to win design awards the way HUUM is.

If the look of your sauna interior matters to you, HUUM has the edge.

Steam Quality (Loyly)

This is what sauna purists care about most. Loyly - the Finnish word for the steam that rises when you throw water on hot stones - should be soft, enveloping, and even. Good loyly doesn't sting your ears or feel harsh.

HUUM heaters hold a massive amount of stone (the Drop holds up to 265 lbs, the Hive up to 440 lbs). More stone mass means more thermal energy stored, which produces softer, more consistent steam. You can throw multiple ladles of water in quick succession and the stones stay hot. The steam comes off gentle and satisfying every time.

Harvia heaters hold less stone in most models. Their wall-mounted units hold 20-45 lbs, and even the freestanding Cilindro tops out around 200 lbs. The steam is perfectly good, but with less stone mass, you'll notice the temperature drop more after heavy water throws. The Legend series with its stone cage holds more and produces better loyly, narrowing the gap.

For pure steam quality, HUUM wins - especially the larger models with their massive stone capacity.

Performance and Features

Feature Harvia HUUM
Product Range Extensive (dozens of models) Focused (handful of models)
Stone Capacity 20-200 lbs (model dependent) 130-440 lbs

Price Range $300-$3,000+ $1,200-$3,500+
Availability Widely available globally Growing but more limited
Warranty 3-5 years (model dependent) 3-5 years

Smart Controls

Both brands offer app-controlled heating. HUUM's UKU controller is excellent - clean interface, Wi-Fi built in, easy scheduling and remote start from your phone. It feels modern and intuitive.

Harvia's smart options (Xenio WiFi, Griffin) work well but can feel like add-ons rather than integrated features. You often need to purchase the WiFi module separately. The app is functional but less polished than HUUM's.

Price and Value

Harvia covers every price point. You can get a perfectly functional Harvia wall-mount heater for $300-600 for a small home sauna. Their mid-range and premium models run $800-3,000+. This range means there's a Harvia for almost any budget.

HUUM starts higher. Their entry point is around $1,200, and their premium models run $2,500-3,500+. You're paying for design, stone capacity, and steam quality. There's no budget HUUM option.

If you're on a budget, Harvia is the clear choice. If you're building a premium sauna and steam quality is your priority, HUUM delivers something special.
