Sauna Bucket and Ladle: Essential Steam-Making Tools
The sauna bucket (kiulu in Finnish) and ladle (kauha) are the tools you use to create loyly - the burst of steam that defines the traditional sauna experience. You fill the bucket with water, use the ladle to scoop it up, and pour it over the hot sauna stones. Simple tools, but choosing the right ones and using them properly makes a real difference.
Materials
Wood. Wooden buckets and ladles are the traditional choice. They look and feel authentic, won't burn your hands when you touch them in a hot sauna (wood has low thermal conductivity), and they age beautifully. Pine, aspen, and cedar are common. The bucket is typically lined with a plastic or metal insert to prevent leaking as the wood dries between uses.
Stainless steel. Modern stainless steel buckets and ladles are durable, easy to clean, and won't develop mold or mildew. The downside: metal gets hot. Make sure any metal ladle has a wooden handle, and don't leave a steel bucket on a high bench where it could become too hot to touch.
Copper. A premium option that looks stunning and develops a natural patina over time. Copper has mild antimicrobial properties. Like stainless steel, handles should be wood to prevent burns.
How to Use Them
Fill the bucket with clean, cool or lukewarm water before entering the sauna. Set it on the floor (the coolest spot) or on a low shelf. When you're ready for steam, dip the ladle about half full and pour it slowly over the center of the stone pile. Don't dump the whole ladle at once - a controlled pour distributes water across more stones and produces better, more even steam.
Wait 10-15 seconds for the loyly wave to settle before deciding if you want more. It's much easier to add steam than to take it away. If you pour too much, the stones cool down and take time to recover.
For Aufguss-style sessions, you can add a few drops of sauna-safe essential oil to the water. Eucalyptus, birch, and pine are popular choices.
Size and Capacity
A standard sauna bucket holds 1-2 gallons. For a typical 15-20 minute session with moderate steam, that's more than enough. If you enjoy heavy loyly or share the sauna with a group, consider a larger bucket or simply refill between rounds.
Ladles come in various handle lengths. Longer handles (16-20 inches) are more practical because they let you reach the center of the stone pile without getting too close to the direct heat of the heater.
