4-Person vs 6-Person Sauna: Which Size Do You Actually Need?
Picking between a 4-person and 6-person sauna feels like it should be simple. More people, bigger box, right? But the size difference affects way more than just headcount. It changes your heater requirements, energy costs, heat-up time, installation footprint, and how the sauna actually feels when you're using it.
Here's the honest breakdown so you don't end up with a sauna that's too cramped or too big for how you'll actually use it.

Actual Dimensions and Floor Space
A 4-person sauna typically measures around 5x5 feet to 6x5 feet interior. That gives you 25-30 square feet of floor space. Enough for two bench levels, with comfortable seating for 3-4 adults. You can lie down on the upper bench in most models, which matters more than people think.
A 6-person sauna usually runs 6x6 feet to 7x6 feet, giving you 36-42 square feet inside. The extra room means wider benches, more legroom, an L-shaped or U-shaped bench layout, and enough space that six adults can actually sit without bumping knees. Two people can lie down at the same time.
In barrel sauna terms, the difference is roughly a 6-foot barrel (4-person) versus an 8-foot barrel (6-person). The diameter stays the same, but the length grows.
How "Person Ratings" Actually Work
Manufacturer person ratings assume everyone is sitting upright, shoulder to shoulder, with minimal personal space. Real-world comfort is different. A "4-person" sauna is genuinely comfortable for 2-3 people who want room to breathe, stretch out, and not feel like they're on a crowded bus. A "6-person" sauna is comfortable for 3-4 people with real room to spare, or 5-6 people who don't mind being cozy.
If you plan to sauna with your partner most of the time and occasionally have friends over, a 4-person sauna works great. If you regularly host or have a family of four, the 6-person model is the smarter buy.
Heater Size and Energy Use
A 4-person sauna needs a 4.5-6kW heater. That's the sweet spot for heating 150-200 cubic feet of air to 170-190F. Heat-up time is typically 25-40 minutes depending on outside temperature and insulation.
A 6-person sauna needs a 6-9kW heater to handle the larger volume. Some models can get by with a 6kW heater, but an 8kW unit heats the space faster and handles cold weather better. Heat-up time runs 30-50 minutes.
The energy difference per session is modest. A 6kW heater running 45 minutes uses about 4.5 kWh ($0.72 at average rates). A 9kW heater for the same time uses about 6.75 kWh ($1.08). Over a year of regular use (3-4 times per week), the 6-person sauna costs maybe $50-$70 more in electricity. Not a dealbreaker.
The bigger consideration is your electrical panel. A 6kW heater runs on a 30-amp, 240V circuit. A 9kW heater needs a 40-amp circuit. Make sure your panel has capacity before you order.

Installation and Placement
Both sizes need a level surface, electrical hookup, and clearance around the unit for ventilation and access. The 4-person model fits on most existing decks and patios without modification. You can tuck one into a corner of your yard and it doesn't dominate the space.
The 6-person model needs a bigger footprint and might require a reinforced deck or concrete pad if you're placing it on an elevated surface. Weight matters here - a 6-person sauna can weigh 800-1,200 pounds before you add people. Make sure your deck can handle that load.
Resale Value and Flexibility
Here's something people don't think about: the 6-person sauna has better resale value if you ever sell your home. It appeals to more buyers because it accommodates families and social groups. Real estate agents consistently report that outdoor saunas add perceived value to a property, and larger units more so.
The 6-person also gives you flexibility as your life changes. Kids grow up and want to join. You start hosting more. Your partner gets into sauna bathing too. Having extra room means you won't outgrow the sauna in three years and wish you'd gone bigger.
The "Buy Bigger" Argument
Almost every sauna owner says the same thing: "I wish I'd bought one size up." It's the most common piece of advice in sauna forums, Reddit threads, and owner reviews. The price difference between a 4-person and 6-person is usually $1,500-$3,000. Over a decade of ownership, that's negligible. But the extra space makes every single session more comfortable.
That said, if your space literally can't fit a 6-person model, or if you're a solo user who values a compact, quick-heating sauna, the 4-person is a perfectly good choice. Don't buy more sauna than your yard or budget can handle.
Who Should Buy Which
Go 4-person if you:
- Primarily sauna alone or with one other person
- Have limited yard or deck space
- Want faster heat-up times and slightly lower energy costs
- Are on a tighter budget
- Value a smaller footprint over extra room
Go 6-person if you:
- Sauna with family or friends regularly
- Want room to lie down during sessions
- Plan to host guests or social sauna nights
- Have the yard space and electrical capacity
- Want something you won't outgrow
