2-Person vs 3-Person Sauna: Is One More Seat Worth It?
When you're shopping for compact saunas, the difference between a 2-person and 3-person model looks small on paper. Maybe 12-18 inches of extra width or depth. But that small difference changes how the sauna feels, how you use it, and whether you'll still be happy with it in three years. Here's the honest comparison.

Actual Dimensions
A 2-person sauna typically has an interior footprint of about 3.5x3.5 feet to 4x4 feet. That's roughly 12-16 square feet of floor space. Enough for two adults to sit side by side on a bench, but not much breathing room. Your shoulders will be close to or touching your partner's. Lying down is not possible in most 2-person models.
A 3-person sauna bumps up to about 4x5 feet to 5x5 feet interior, giving you 20-25 square feet. That extra 4-9 square feet doesn't just add a third seat - it makes the space feel completely different for the two people already in it. There's elbow room, legroom, and in some models, enough bench depth to sit cross-legged or semi-recline.
The Comfort Truth
Manufacturer capacity ratings assume people sitting upright with minimal personal space. In real life:
- A "2-person" sauna is genuinely comfortable for 1 person who wants room to breathe. Two adults can fit but it's tight.
- A "3-person" sauna is genuinely comfortable for 2 people with room to spare. Three adults can fit but it's cozy.
The practical takeaway: buy the 3-person if you plan to sauna with anyone else regularly. Even if it's just your partner, the extra room makes the difference between "this is nice" and "I feel like I'm in a closet."

Heater and Electrical Considerations
Some 2-person saunas can run on a standard 120V outlet with a 3kW heater. This is a genuine advantage if running a 240V circuit to your sauna location is expensive or impractical. The tradeoff is slower heat-up time and lower maximum temperature - many 120V saunas top out at 150-160F rather than the 175-190F that a 240V heater delivers.
Most 3-person saunas require a 240V, 30-amp circuit. If you're having an electrician run a new circuit anyway (which costs $300-$800), you might as well go with the bigger sauna since the electrical cost is the same either way.
The Space Question
A 2-person sauna fits in spaces where a 3-person won't. A large master bathroom, a walk-in closet conversion, a narrow balcony, or a very small patio can accommodate a 2-person model but not a 3-person. If your space is genuinely constrained, the 2-person is the only option and it's a good one.
But if you have the room - even just an extra 2 feet in each direction - the 3-person model is worth it every time. The quality of each session improves noticeably with that additional space.
Future-Proofing
People's sauna habits change. You start solo, then your partner joins you. Friends come over and want to try it. Kids get old enough to participate. A 2-person sauna locks you into solo or couples-only use with no flexibility. A 3-person gives you enough room to occasionally host a third person without it being miserable for everyone.
The price difference between 2-person and 3-person is typically $800-$1,500. Over a 15-20 year sauna lifespan, that's negligible. Buy the size that gives you room to grow.
The Verdict
The 2-person sauna is for people with genuine space constraints or those who will only ever sauna alone. The 3-person sauna is the better buy for nearly everyone else. The comfort improvement for two people using it is dramatic, the cost difference is modest, and the flexibility to accommodate a third person is genuinely useful. If you can fit a 3-person, get the 3-person.
