Short answer: buy an indoor sauna only after the room and installation plan work. Confirm sauna type, finished footprint, delivery route, capacity, heater and stone system, electrical supply, floor, moisture and leak path, ventilation, door swing, clearances, controls, service access, permits, and total installed cost. A low cabinet price can become an expensive project when those items are unresolved.

Harvia's current design guidance tells buyers to measure room width, height, depth, doors, windows, and uninsulated surfaces before heater selection and to plan electrical work early. Homecraft's kit guide likewise places electrical rough-in, sensor wiring, wall preparation, ventilation openings, heater support, and bench backing before interior paneling.

Does an indoor sauna need a floor drain?

Not every residential sauna uses a floor drain, but water use, cleaning, floor construction, adjoining wet room, leak path, and local rules determine the plan. The room still needs a cleanable, moisture-tolerant floor and a drying strategy.

Can an indoor sauna go on carpet?

A steam room is a different high-humidity enclosure and generator system, even when retailers call it a steam sauna. Compare those projects separately.

1. Approve the location before selecting a model

Record the finished room dimensions, ceiling, floor slope, windows, doors, nearby plumbing, HVAC, sprinklers, detectors, electrical panel, and the path from delivery vehicle to final position. Measure the narrowest doorway, turn, stair, and elevator.

Confirm ownership and building authority. A renter, condo owner, or homeowner modifying a wet room can face different permissions. Use the apartment and condo guide for shared-building constraints.

2. Size for usable positions, not the person label

“Two person” and “four person” are not standardized comfort measurements. Compare interior bench width, depth, height, foot space, door path, heater guard, backrests, controls, and whether users sit upright or lie down.

Mark each expected body position on a scaled plan. Harvia uses about 600 millimeters as a rule-of-thumb sitting width in its design guidance, but the finished product dimensions and user needs control.

3. Match the heater to adjusted room volume

Traditional sauna heater sizing depends on room volume and construction. Glass, stone, masonry, and other uninsulated surfaces can increase adjusted heat load. Use the heater maker's method, approved stone quantity and grading, safety distances, controls, sensor, guard, and ventilation instructions.

Do not upsize a heater to compensate for poor insulation, an open door, or missing ventilation design. The room and heater are one system.

4. Verify electrical scope before purchase

Collect the exact voltage, phase, frequency, wattage, current, conductor, overcurrent protection, disconnect, controller, sensor, lighting, fan, and remote-start requirements. Ask a qualified electrician to verify the building supply and local code before ordering.

5. Build a floor, moisture, and leak plan

Define the finished floor, level tolerance, load, floor protection, cleaning method, water use, drainage, threshold, leak path, waterproofing, and drying. A traditional sauna where water is poured on stones has a different moisture profile from a dry infrared cabin, but both need spill and cleaning planning.

6. Design ventilation and drying together

Ventilation supports fresh air during use and drying afterward. Its supply and exhaust locations depend on the heater, room, mechanical system, and manufacturer. More airflow is not automatically better if it short-circuits heat or conflicts with controls.

7. Resolve the door and exterior clearance

Add door swing, handle, landing, hinge service, ventilation undercut or seals, nearby walls, glass handling, and an unobstructed exit. The exterior footprint needs assembly and maintenance space, not only the panel dimensions.

Keep storage, furniture, textiles, and circulation outside heater and appliance clearances. Verify access to controllers, junction boxes, drivers, vents, panels, and fasteners after installation.

8. Normalize the quote

10. Plan installation and commissioning

Homecraft's kit guidance places electrical boxes, sensor wiring, vapor barrier, wall strapping, ventilation openings, heater backing, door framing, and bench support in a specific sequence. A prefabricated cabin will use a different sequence, but the lesson is the same: concealed requirements must be resolved before surfaces close.
