Pick the heater and guard, map the door and walking route, set the upper heat zone, and then choose a straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, opposing, floating, or movable design that can be built, cleaned, and serviced safely.
The ten concepts below are design directions, not ready-to-build plans. Each one includes the condition that makes it useful and the detail most likely to cause trouble.

Can sauna benches be floating?
Yes, when concealed backing, framing, connections, spans, loads, and installation details are designed for the project. Finish paneling alone is not structural proof.
Is an L-shaped or U-shaped sauna bench better?
An L can add a social return with less perimeter than a U. A U can suit a larger room, but it uses more circulation space and creates more corners. Test usable positions, not just total length.
Can LED lighting go under a sauna bench?
Only when the full lighting system is approved for the actual heat and moisture zones. Keep drivers, connectors, wiring, and service access within the maker's limits.
What wood should a sauna bench use?
Choose a documented sauna-compatible assembly and compare surface temperature, density, finish, splinter quality, fasteners, movement, cleaning, and replacement parts. Species name alone is not enough.
What a sauna bench has to do
A bench locates the user's body within the heat zone, supports sitting or lying, provides foot placement, and shapes circulation around the heater. It also has to dry, tolerate cleaning, allow inspection, and transfer loads to a documented structure.
Harvia's current bench guidance recommends 1100 to 1200 millimeters between its upper benches and the ceiling, at least 500 millimeters of upper-bench depth, and about 600 millimeters of width per sitting place. Those numbers are useful manufacturer references, not universal dimensions.

1. Straight two-tier bench
Works when: one long wall can support sitting or lying while the opposite side carries the heater and entry route. This is often the clearest layout for compact rooms.
Verify: upper-bench headroom, foot level, step sequence, wall backing, lying length, and the clearance between the lowest tread and heater guard.
2. Floating bench with a clear floor
Works when: the wall framing and backing are designed for concealed support and the open floor improves cleaning access or visual space.
Verify: structural loads, connection details, spans, wood movement, removable tops, and where concealed hardware can be inspected. Do not infer capacity from a photograph.
3. L-shaped social corner
Works when: a return bench gives users another orientation without constricting the heater or door route. It can make conversation easier than one long row.
Verify: whether the inside corner is a real sitting position, how knees overlap, and whether the return removes useful lying length. Use the bench-layout guide for scaled planning.
4. Opposing face-to-face benches
Works when: the room is wide enough for two full-depth benches plus comfortable knee space and a safe central zone.
Verify: Harvia describes 2200 millimeters as a rule-of-thumb minimum width for its opposing-bench discussion and 2500 millimeters as more generous, depending on the heater. Count the heater, guard, and legs before assuming both sides are usable.
5. U-shaped bench around a focal point
Works when: a larger room can support three bench runs around an open center or compatible embedded heater.
Verify: corner ergonomics, multiple entry points, guard continuity, embedding flange, cleanout access, and whether the extra perimeter creates genuine capacity.
6. Wide lounge platform
Works when: lying down, cross-legged sitting, or flexible posture matters more than maximizing narrow seats.
Verify: reach to the backrest, remaining circulation, ceiling relationship, and structure. Harvia recommends 600 millimeters or more of upper-bench depth when users want to lie down or sit with feet up. Continue with the bench-depth guide.
7. Removable lower bench or step module
Works when: a lower platform needs to move for floor cleaning, service, or a different user arrangement.
Verify: weight, handholds, locking or anti-slide detail, stable bearing, dry storage, and a route that does not require carrying it over a hot heater.
8. Modular backrest with concealed lighting
Works when: a repeatable slat module provides wall separation, a visual band, and glare-controlled light.
Verify: backrest projection, removability, wall gap, driver location, cable and connector limits, actual temperature zone, and service access. Use the sauna-backrest guide before specifying the assembly.
9. Curved-wall barrel bench
Works when: straight benches run along the barrel axis and fit beneath the changing wall curve. Opposing benches can preserve a simple center path.
Verify: head and shoulder clearance at every height, heater end-wall zone, floor support, drainage, and the maker's approved fastening. Raising a bench can reduce usable width faster than expected.
10. Mixed-height seating for different users
Works when: household users want different heat exposure or need an easier first seat. A full-depth lower position can be more useful than a narrow decorative ledge.
Verify: route, step rise, hand support, guards, headroom, supervision, and project accessibility requirements. Do not label a layout accessible based on seat height alone.
Material and upgrade decisions
After the geometry works, compare wood and construction. Ask for species, grade, finished dimensions, surface quality, hidden or exposed fasteners, support system, finish, care, replacement parts, and warranty. Use the bench-material guide rather than choosing from color alone.
High-value upgrades usually solve a defined problem: a removable section for cleaning, a compatible guard, a better step, a movable backrest, a serviceable light, or a wider lying position. Add-on cup holders, cushions, shelves, or electronics still need hot-zone, moisture, spill, and heater-clearance review.
