Bench geometry beats capacity labels
Ask for a floor plan and record the flat usable bench length, depth, height, distance between benches, heater-guard intrusion, door swing, and clear aisle. A barrel's curved wall can narrow shoulder and head space even when the exterior diameter sounds generous.
Mark the interior and bench on the ground with tape. Test the intended number of seated adults. If someone expects to recline, compare their height to the actual bench, not the room length. A porch shortens the heated room when overall length is held constant.
Diameter, length, and heat stratification
More diameter can improve headroom and allow wider or contoured benches, but it also increases heated volume. More length adds bench room but may need a larger heater. Use the heater maker's adjusted-volume method for glass and other uninsulated surfaces. Do not assume the curved shell guarantees even temperature at foot and head level.
Roof, bands, staves, and climate
- Roof: confirm shingles, membrane, drip edges, fasteners, penetrations, and whether they are included.
- Staves: compare species, grade, thermal treatment, thickness, profile, spare pieces, finish instructions, and allowed checking or movement.
- Bands: get the tightening and inspection procedure. Seasonal wood movement may require adjustment.
- Ends and glass: windows and full-glass fronts change exposure, weight, heat load, and freight risk.

Use the cradle layout in the exact manual. A slab, pavers, beams, or deck must support every cradle continuously, remain level, drain away from the room, and carry the kit, heater, stones, roof, snow where applicable, and bathers. Do not assume an existing deck is adequate.
Plan where wash water and rain go. Drains need a legal discharge route and freeze protection if applicable. Avoid a base that traps water against wood. Photograph the completed base, assembly, roof, finish, and electrical or chimney work for the warranty file.
Heater and utilities
Obtain the heater model, control, sensor, stones, and room manual before purchase. Verify sizing, voltage, amperage, phase, breaker, conductor, disconnect, control location, clearances, and whether lighting needs another circuit. Use a qualified electrician and required permits.
For a wood stove, verify the room is designed for that exact stove and chimney. Include floor and wall protection, guard, connector, listed chimney, roof pass-through, termination, fire and carbon monoxide planning, fuel storage, and inspection. A generic wood stove is not a sauna-heater substitute.
Delivery and assembly
- Get pallet dimensions, count, weight, freight terms, curbside limits, and damage-reporting window.
- Measure the truck route, gate, slope, overhead clearance, crane or forklift access, and staging area.
