1. Measure the problem before changing the sauna

Write down the starting room temperature, outdoor temperature for an outdoor sauna, heater setpoint, elapsed warm-up time, and temperature at the end of the test. Use a sauna-rated thermometer placed where the room or heater manual specifies. A household wall thermometer in a cool corner and the control sensor near the ceiling can report very different conditions.

Keep the door closed during the test and note whether all heating elements glow or cycle as expected. Do not touch the heater or elements. This record helps a dealer, electrician, or technician separate normal cold-weather warm-up from a sizing or equipment problem.

2. Confirm heater size using effective room volume

Heater capacity should match the sauna manufacturer's calculation, not only floor area. Measure length, width, and ceiling height to calculate room volume. Then account for glass, masonry, tile, concrete, logs, or other uninsulated surfaces exactly as the heater maker instructs. These surfaces absorb or lose more heat and can make the room behave like a larger sauna.

HUUM's control guidance says heater wattage must match calculated sauna volume while considering uninsulated and heat-accumulating surfaces. Its current STEEL heater specifications, for example, publish a different minimum and maximum steam-room volume for each power rating. Use the specifications for your exact model and supply voltage.

If the existing heater falls outside the approved range, contact the sauna manufacturer or dealer. Do not simply fit the largest unit that will physically fit. A replacement changes clearances, controls, wiring, breaker size, sensor requirements, and sometimes the room ventilation.

3. Inspect the door, ceiling, walls, and other heat-loss paths

A door that does not latch evenly can release hot air faster than the heater replaces it. With the sauna cool and off, inspect the door alignment, gasket or intended gap, wall and ceiling joints, and penetrations. Use only repair methods and materials approved for sauna temperatures.

Large glass areas and uninsulated masonry are not automatically defects, but they must be included in heater sizing. Outdoor rooms can also lose more heat through wind exposure, an uninsulated floor or ceiling, and repeated door openings. Fix construction defects before trying to compensate through unsafe control changes.

4. Check sauna stones when the heater is cold

Stones affect airflow through an electric heater and the way stored heat becomes steam. More stones do not automatically mean a hotter room. The correct result comes from the specified stone material, size, amount, and placement.

HUUM's current stone instructions say to place stones individually, use larger pieces at the bottom and sides, and leave space for air circulation. Harvia's stone guidance tells owners to check the correct size and amount in the heater manual and not create a high pile on top.

  • Turn the heater off and let it cool completely before inspection.
  • Remove crumbled fragments and dust only as the manual directs.
  • Replace deteriorated stones with the approved type and size.
  • Do not pack stones so tightly that air cannot rise through the heater.
  • Do not operate an electric heater with exposed elements if its manual requires them to be covered.

5. Keep ventilation open and correct

Blocking a vent may feel like an easy way to retain heat, but it can interfere with fresh air, heater cooling, sensor behavior, and temperature distribution. Correct ventilation is part of the sauna system.

Harvia's current ventilation guidance distinguishes mechanical from gravity ventilation and specifies different supply-air locations. Its gravity-ventilation example places supply air below or next to the heater and exhaust near the floor away from the heater. The current HUUM STEEL manual likewise treats supply, exhaust, and drying air as parts of one design.

Because layouts vary by heater and ventilation type, do not copy a vent position from another sauna. Confirm that grilles are open and unobstructed, then compare their size and location with the room and heater manuals.

6. Verify sensor and thermometer placement

The heater control responds to its temperature sensor, not to how warm the lower bench feels. A sensor installed too close to supply air, too far from the specified heater position, or at the wrong height can make the system cycle incorrectly. Moving it to force a higher temperature defeats a safety control and is not a do-it-yourself adjustment.

Harvia says the temperature sensor must be installed in the location stated by the heater manual and provides minimum distances from mechanical supply air. Ask the installer to compare the actual location with the diagram for the exact heater and controller.

7. Treat electrical and high-limit problems as service issues

If an electric heater warms weakly because one element is not operating, the room may heat slowly while the controls appear normal. Repeated breaker trips, burning odors, unusual buzzing, damaged wiring, discoloration, or recurring high-limit trips are reasons to turn the unit off and arrange service.

Do not increase breaker size, bypass a door or temperature sensor, reset a limit repeatedly, or open energized equipment. Traditional, wood-fired, and infrared saunas need different checks

Electric traditional sauna

Focus on heater sizing, all heating elements, stones, control and sensor placement, ventilation, supply voltage, and heat loss. Electrical diagnosis belongs to a qualified professional.

Wood-burning sauna

Use only the approved stove and chimney instructions. Weak heat may relate to fuel moisture, draft, air supply, ash accumulation, stove sizing, chimney condition, or negative pressure in the building. Do not alter a flue, damper, clearance, or combustion-air path without qualified guidance. Stop using the stove if smoke spills into the room or a carbon-monoxide alarm activates.

Infrared sauna

An infrared cabin is designed around radiant panels and may use a lower air temperature than a traditional sauna. Check the cabin's rated operating range, panel operation, dedicated-circuit requirements, vent clearance, and door fit. Do not judge it only by a traditional-sauna air-temperature target.

Safe improvements that can make the experience feel warmer
